7 Common Hair Extension Myths Totally Debunked

Are hair extensions a problem? Are they expensive? Do they not look natural?

It seems as though there’s been a cloud of misconception about hair extensions since the moment they became popular. It seems few who haven’t tried extensions know whether they are a literal weight on your shoulders – or a relief. For some, hair extensions are just a versatile accessory designed to help you get creative with your hair, but without any significant commitments. For others, they are a life-saver and the only way to achieve length and fullness.

If the jury is still out on whether they’re the right choice for you, here are some hair extension myths debunked that shouldn’t stand in the way of your decision.

Myth #1: They’re Expensive

The days of exorbitant prices and exclusivity in the hair extension world are over! Synthetic extensions are just okay and a cheaper option, but you just can’t beat the duration and quality of their natural counterparts. Hair extensions are a worthy investment of typically a couple of hundred dollars and mean you’ll get to play with your look for weeks and months to come.

All and all extensions have become more affordable and less exclusive for everyone.

Myth #2: They Won’t Blend In

Many worry that hair extensions won’t blend naturally, causing an unsightly, fake look. Thankfully, there’s new technology that flawlessly color-matches for your hair, as well as state-of-the-art application methods that’ll make them blend in seamlessly.

At Elan, we offer Bonded, Volume Weft, Tape In, I-Tips, Clip In and Halo Hair Piece, giving you many different blending options to select the right one for you. It will appear that your hair miraculously grew out overnight!

Myth #3: They’ll Damage Your Hair

This particular myth isn’t entirely untrue. However, there are many ways you can have your hair extensions applied. Some methods include using glue or heat on your hair, but these aren’t the only methods out there. The most common and safest forms of hair extensions are clip-ins, Tape Ins or Bonded.

Myth #4: They Aren’t Ethically Sourced

If you or a friend have ever gone to the salon and asked for your locks to be donated, then you have a taste for how human hair extensions are sourced. People worldwide can cut and sell their healthy hair for a fair price, and reputable salons will often have partnerships with trustworthy manufacturers to ensure that your extensions come only from a willful participant.

Myth #5: They’ll Give You Headaches

Many of us know the sensation of cutting off a few inches of hair and suddenly feeling 5 lbs lighter, so you may think the opposite is true. You may think that adding hair to your head will make you feel like you’re carrying extra weight or that you’ll have something tugging on your scalp and causing you discomfort. While there’s a very brief adjustment period after putting your extensions on, there’s no need to worry about the potential of headaches.

However, if this is a concern for you, you can always request that your hairstylist test your tolerance before deciding how much volume you’d like on your hair.

Myth #6: They Can Only Be Worn One Way

You may think you can only wear your hair extensions down and in silky smooth waves, but that’s not the case at all. Hair extensions were made to play around with, and they give you the freedom to explore a plethora of hairstyles for all occasions. Try them in a high pony, regal princess braids, or down and casual.

Myth #7: They’re Too High Maintenance

While an initial consultation with a licensed hairstylist is highly recommended (available with us here at Elan!) at the start of your hair extension journey, you don’t have to wait to snag an appointment at the salon to maintain your hair extensions or even to put them on. Once you learn, you can take them home with you and experiment as you please.
