5 Tips for Caring for Your Hair Between Salon Visits

hair care tips

Imagine you are just walking out of the salon and your hair looks utterly fabulous! Your cut is fresh. Your hair shines perfectly. Your curls fall just the way they should. Everything about your hair is perfect.

However, after a week goes by and a few washes occur, you’ve noticed some of the shine is gone and nothing is falling the way it did when you first left the salon!

We all know the feeling.

But don’t worry, there are still things you can do to keep your hair looking its best until your next salon visit. In this blog, we’ll share 5 tips for caring for your hair between salon visits. From using the right products to protecting your hair from damage, these tips will help you keep your hair healthy and looking great until your next appointment.

Don’t Wash Your Hair Every Day

If you can, avoid washing your hair every day. Over-washing can strip your hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness, frizz, and breakage. If you must wash daily, use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to minimize damage.

We also suggest that when you do wash, use warm, rather than hot water. Hot water can also strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving your hair dry and your scalp irritated.

Use Quality Hair Products

If you want your hair to look its best, you need to use quality hair products. This means using products that use only natural or proven ingredients for protecting and stimulating your hair.

For example, your shampoo and conditioner should be free of:

  • Sulfates
  • Parabens
  • Polyethylene Glycols
  • Triclosan
  • Formaldehyde
  • Synthetic Fragrances and Colors
  • Dimethicone
  • Retinyl Palmitate

These harsh ingredients will strip your hair of all of its natural, protective oils, leaving it dry, brittle, and often unmanageable.

On the other hand, quality hair products contain surfactants that are easier on your hair – cleaning rather than stripping it. Many contain botanicals and essential oils to nourish your hair as well and give the shampoo a natural, fresh fragrance.

Try a Silk Pillowcase

If you’re looking for a way to help keep your hair looking healthy and hydrated between salon visits, then consider trying a silk pillowcase.

  • Silk is gentle on the hair and helps to keep it from becoming frizzy or tangled overnight.
  • It can also help to reduce the amount of hair that is lost while rubbing and sleeping against your pillowcase.
  • Silk pillowcases are also hypoallergenic and can help to keep your hair and skin free of irritants.

Plus, it’s a luxurious way to sleep!

Deep Condition Your Hair Regularly

If you want your hair to look its best, you need to deep condition it regularly. This will help to restore moisture and protect your hair from damage.

At Elan, we carry an excellent selection of over 20 different hair masks and deep conditioners from Oribé, Kerastase, R+Co, and R+Co Bleu. Be sure to ask your stylist for recommendations for your hair.

Between your regular appointments, you might consider getting a keratin smoother or keratin express smoother in the salon. A keratin smoother seals the cuticles of the hair with a protein shield that gets rid of frizz and makes the hair softer and shinier. Keratin makes your hair more manageable and gives it a smoother feel. If you get a keratin treatment after coloring your hair, the keratin will seal the color into your hair and add a healthy shine.

Limit the Use of Heat Styling Tools

If you’ve read our blog for long, you know what we’re about to say. If you want to keep your hair looking its best between salon visits, it’s important to limit the use of heat styling tools when you can. Heat is an amazing tool for styling hair, but with frequent use, it can damage your hair, making it dry and brittle.

Whenever you can, give your hair a break from heat. Even an occasional break will help. Let your hair air dry whenever possible, and if you must use a blow dryer, always, always use a heat protectant and use the lowest setting possible. We have several heat protectants at Elan Hair and would be happy to recommend one to you.

If you use a straightener with temperature control, and we hope your flat iron does have temperature control, be sure to use the lowest setting you can. Most people can find a sweet spot between 250º and 375º. We’ve seen flat irons that go up to 500º and there is one that has a max temperature of 750ºF! For the love of keratin, please limit your heat to 400 or less. Very few people will need more heat than that.

We hope you found these tips helpful for keeping your hair healthy and looking great between salon visits. Remember, your hair is an important part of your appearance, so take good care of it! If you have any questions or need more advice, be sure to consult with your stylist the next time you’re in the salon.
